PHP Comments

1.  Purpose
  • Explain Code: Comments help you (and others) understand the purpose and logic behind your code. They make it easier to follow and maintain your code, especially for complex or intricate parts.
  • Improve Readability: Well-commented code is significantly more readable and easier to understand, both for yourself and for other developers who might work on your code.
  • Debugging: Comments can be used to temporarily disable parts of your code while debugging. This helps you isolate and fix issues.
  • Documentation: Comments can be used to generate documentation for your code.
2. Syntax
  • Single-line comments:
    • Start with // or #
    • Comment continues until the end of the line.
  • Example:
// This is a single-line comment
$name = "John Doe"; // Comment after the code
  • Multi-line comments:
    • Start with /* and end with */
    • Can span multiple lines.
  • Example:
/*
This is a
multi-line comment.
*/
3. Example of single line and multiline comments:
<?php
// Calculate the sum of two numbers
function add($a, $b) {
/*
This function adds two numbers together.
@param int $a The first number.
@param int $b The second number.
@return int The sum of $a and $b.
*/
return $a + $b;
}
$result = add(5, 3); // Calculate the sum
echo $result; // Output: 8
?>
